The California Palms employs multiple counselors and case managers to help ensure our clients receive the best care possible. All of our professional clinical staff have extensive experience in the fields of behavioral health and substance abuse. The Palms is affiliated with local psychiatrists, doctors of internal medicine, detox facilities, and others with specialized training. We aim to provide our clients with the most comprehensive care available in the field.

Mark has sixteen years personal recovery experience and thirteen years experience in the behavioral health and substance abuse field. Mark has developed and implemented multiple evidence-based chemical dependency treatment programs. At California Palms, Mark is part of the executive management team as Clinical Director in individual care related to substance abuse and chemical dependency.

Dr. Altman is a veteran with over twenty years experience, and the Palms main clinical psychologist. Dr. Altman focuses on the treatment of depression, anxiety, grief, and PTSD. Dr. Altman utilizes the techniques of Energy Field Psychology, Clinical EFT(Tappings), EMDR and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. These often result in the rapid resolution of painful memories associated with the trauma of PTSD, unresolved grief, sexual abuse, etc. Dr. Altman provides a positive, supportive, environment where residents have an opportunity to be healed of their emotional pain and fears. Dr. Altman meets the resident veterans where they are and to encourage a shift in thinking from predominately negative and fearful, to positive and hopeful.

Dr. Ellis has been working in private practice since 1992 and began his private practice in Boardman in 1999. Dr. Ellis brings over 20 years of Emergency Room experience and care from hospitals such as St. Elizabeth Health Center and the Cleveland Clinic. In mid-2014, Dr. Ellis launched the area’s first locally owned and operated urgent care located conveniently in Boardman, Ohio. Dr. Ellis is affiliated with the California Palms as medical director and provides veterans undergoing treatment at the Palms medical services at his Boardman offices.

Dr. Maggiano is a state licensed medical doctor with twenty-eight years experience specializing in neurology. Dr. Maggiano has training in horticulture therapy and is co-founder of Earth Angel Farm which uses horticulture to assist individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. At California Palms, Dr. Maggiano teaches a Horticulture Therapy group introducing greenhouse practices to veterans undergoing treatment. Dr. Maggiano also works off-site with the veterans at various green houses and with an off-site Goat Therapy program.

Dr. Giorgetti has thirteen years experience in the behavioral health and substance abuse field. She has extensive knowledge of individual counseling and the treatment of mental health disorders. Dr. Giorgetti works part time at the California Palms providing psychological testing, individual mental health treatment, and evaluation and assessment of veterans undergoing treatment.

Lisa Kugler, PsyD. is a licensed psychologist active in the field of substance abuse and mental health services for over 20 years. Dr. Kugler was head of the behavioral health and physical health integration team for a community based out-patient clinic and team lead for the Center for Treatment of Addictive Disorders at the Pittsburgh Veteran's Administration. Dr. Kugler has provided services to adults, veterans, inmates, adolescents, and children for over 20 years. Dr. Kugler has presented nationally her research on topics focused on substance abuse concerns. Currently, Dr. Kugler serves as the CEO of division of the state of Maryland where she leads the management of Medicaid benefits for the state of Maryland. Dr. Kugler advises the Palms in working with the VA, understanding VA protocol, and in structuring a program with sufficient PTSD care to service veterans per VA standards.

Bob is a veteran with 39 years experience in both the public and private sectors. Bob spent the last four years as Deputy Director of a division of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Service responsible for auditing multidisciplinary programs within the Northeast Ohio, in including licensure renewal, grant funding compliance, and assistance with accreditation. Bob has been recognized for implementing best business practices in developing and implementing evidence-based drug prevention and intervention programs. Bob has lectured throughout Ohio on the domestic violence treatment program and has chaired CARF accreditation committees. Bob has also been a department head for chemical dependency treatment, intensive outpatient and anger management therapy groups. Bob has also been a councilman and president of City Council in Warren Ohio. Bob has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Social Work in Education from Youngstown State University. At California Palms, Bob is a part of the executive management team and is the Case Management Director.

Bob is a United States Army Veteran and recovering trauma survivor with nearly 30 years of senior and executive management experience at both large conglomerates and smaller internet and high-tech start-ups. He has a demonstrated passion for implementing structure in chaotic start-up environments and believes that integrity and patience are the keys to successfully navigating the turbulence of early-stage growth. While completing seven years in the United States Army National Guard, Bob used his Military Scholarships to earn a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering at Ohio University. Following graduation, he entered the Naval Nuclear Power Officer's Program and spent nine years operating Naval Reactors on behalf of the General Electric Company. He later earned an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Bob spent a majority of the past decade navigating his son through heroin addiction, overdose, treatment, recovery, and relapse. Bob eventually became an advocate and interventionist and focused his energy on helping the families of opiate and heroin addicts survive the trauma associated with addiction, overdose, and death. Bob is the author of a self help book for families of heroin and opioid addicts titled “Heroin. Living and Dying with an Addict You Love.” Bob is navigating the California Palms through its early growth as head of the executive management team.

George Rutherford is a United States Navy Veteran who has over a decade of experience in the human services/addiction treatment field. After his service as a Navy a Submarine Sonar Technician, George completed his undergraduate study at Clarion University of Pennsylvania and graduate study at Sacred Heart University, completing both Summa cum Laude. George began his journey in the field as a Clinical Technician, Addiction Counselor, Treatment Supervisor, Operations Director and Executive Director. George specializes in program development and continuous improvement. He has acted as a consultant for Pennsylvania elected officials, congressional candidates, and various organizations. George is the autheor of “Working with Families” for the AOD professional.

George has also completed/received the Pennsylvania Certifications Board Certified Trainer, Pennsylvania Certifications Board trained Clinical Supervisor, Safe Crisis Management Instructor, Aggression Replacement Therapist, Functional Behavior Assessment Professional, CrossFit Level 1 Trainer, and NETA Yoga Instructor. Dr. Stephan is a neuropsychologist and licensed clinical psychologist specialized in cognitive training, philosophical psychology and psychotherapeutic interventions based on the mind-body connection and applied psychophysiology. He received his clinical training from the Neuropsychiatry Department of UC San Diego and the Mount Sinai Medical School and Hospital in Manhattan. He earned his Ph.D. from the California School of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Stephan is working with the California Palms in building a neurology program that will provide cognitive training, philosophical, psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions based on the mind-body connection and applied psychophysiology. The Palms is in the process of constructing and purchasing equipment for digital brain electric activity mapping, sensory isolation flotation-tank, hyperbaric chamber, infrared sauna, and zero gravity recliner. The biosound equipment integrates biofeedback, sound frequency healing, music therapy, and guided imagery in one integrated unit.

Don is a veteran with 35 years of veterans service counseling. He spent 16 years in the Marine Corps Recruiting Command and worked as a recruiter, station commander, and acting First Sergeant. Don worked for three years at MEPS Tampa as a Guidance Counselor. Don spent two years as an instructor at the Marine Corps Recruiters school. After leaving the Marine Corps, Don worked as a veteran's advocate for the DAV assisting veterans with disability claims. He has been in recovery for over 22 years and knows how veterans feel and act during addiction. At the Palms Don is the Veteran Services Officer and operates as a veterans advocate.

Carol’s background as a professional dancer, choreographer and teacher imparts a rich blend of movement experience to her students. She holds a Masters in Fine Arts from Smith College and has been practicing yoga and meditation for over 20 years. Carol is certified in three well-known yoga methods: Kripalu Yoga from Kripalu Yoga Center, an Anusura-influenced practice certified by Willow Street, and most recently Yin Yoga. An easy-going teacher, Carol is nonjudgmental in her teaching approach. Her yoga classes are very gentle, great for the beginner and inviting for all levels.

Sebastian holds a Juris Doctor from Western State College of Law and a bachelors degree in civil engineering from Youngstown State University. Sebastian has many years of experience working with those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. At the Palms, Sebastian manages various departments, and drives his unique and innovative vision of superior addiction therapy, mental health therapy, physical fitness,  positive thinking and music therapy, through every facet of operations.
