The California Palms is a luxury residential PTSD, drug addiction, alcohol addiction and substance abuse treatment facility; located in Youngstown, Ohio. The cost of travel to and from our location is covered by various sources. We provide private inpatient evidence-based treatment for substance abuse, drug addiction, opioid addiction, alcohol addiction and co-occurring traumatic stress, like PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc.
At California Palms we offer a relaxed atmosphere that makes recovery from drugs and alcohol possible. Our game room, outdoor patios and other amenities can be view on our pages. You are free to smoke outside on brakes. Our 40 person Jacuzzi-Spa is open 24/7 for relaxation. Our dining room is always open with ready to go food anytime of the day or evening.
Evidence Based Approach for Treating Addiction
The Palms' multi-disciplinary team of state licensed behavioral health professionals provide a variety of individual and group sessions relevant to addiction, mental health, life skills, vocational goals and positive thinking. We focus on evidence-based psychosocial interventions depending on the level of addiction and level of care, intensity, and focus of treatment.
The Palms traumatic stress therapy program includes numerous modalities. The evidence based program includes canine therapy with Karen Lutz, gardening therapy with Dr. Holly Magiano, M.D. music therapy with James "Chip" Buyers, and Mind Boyd Skills course with Dr. Daniel Winkle, M.D.
The Palms incorporates Physical Fitness in our group sessions each day with Karate (Tae Kwon Do) with Master Sam Naples, Tai Chi with Larry Trombitas, Yoga with Carol Hutcik, Boxing with Tom Cordell and Chris Smith, Strength Training with Jimmy Green and Phil Albenze, Water Aerobics with Jimmy Green and Moving Meditation with Master Sam Naples. We also incorporate Family Reunification in a welcoming fun environment.
AMENITIES. The California Palms has spared no expense to make its residents feel comfortable with the best possible environment for their recovery. Each Private Bedroom has a private bathroom, a 50 inch flat screen TV with DVR, and access to cable and Wi-Fi. Indoor Amenities include a full-service Dining Room, Exercise Rooms, Billiards Room, Theater Room, stage, multiple community and group rooms and a 40 person Jacuzzi-Spa for aqua therapy. Outdoor Amenities include an amphitheater, Torch-Lit Patios, basketball court, sand volleyball court, beach sand area, gazebo and a nearby Park with Walking/Bike Trails.
Evidence Based Treatment
The Palms focuses on evidence-based psychosocial interventions and uses the evidence-based approach developed by SAMHSA in its manual titled Substance Abuse Treatment For Persons With Co-Occurring Disorders. We also use the residential levels of care, admission criteria, staffing models, assessment dimensions, intensity, focus of treatment services, and treatment review guidelines found in the Patient Placement Criteria of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
The California Palms divides therapy into eight segments: (1) providing quality addiction therapy with sustainable results, (2) providing long-term mental health treatment, (3) providing vocational assistance to get the resident back to productive work, (4) integrating family into recovery, (5) incorporating peer support into recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Smart Recovery, (6) making recovery sustainable through physical fitness and good nutrition, (7) indoctrinating positive affirmations, and self-esteem into recovery, and (8) providing sustainable aftercare through connectivity with the Palms staff and facility.
Residential Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs
Soon after admission, each resident connects with a treatment team who collaboratively develops a strong, customized treatment plan. We offer a number of options for treating substance use and some mental health issues. These options include: individual sessions with a therapist, group sessions, wellness groups, education lectures and family engagement, mind-body physical fitness, and other classes that teach how to live full lives while making healthy choices after they leave the facility.
The treatment plan places residents in the least aggressive treatment environment appropriate to their therapeutic needs. Duration of treatment and treatment options including: (1). Medically Managed Detoxification; (2). Residential/Inpatient Care; (5). Aftercare and Relapse Prevention. California Palms 24-hour treatment setting provides a continuum of services which meets the needs of residents under various levels of care. We adjust the level of care throughout treatment in response to changing clinical needs and treatment goals.
As individuals move through the continuum, they transition to levels of care greater or lesser intensity, depending on the resident's clinical needs and treatment goals based on the current DSM criteria, and ASAM Patient Placement Criteria. An individual may begin with inpatient treatment only to find that a less intensive level of care, such as intensive outpatient treatment, is more appropriate. Decisions as to which services are provided and how intense are based on the resident's needs.
Residential Inpatient Care Program
California Palms offers long term inpatient treatment from drug addiction, alcohol addiction, traumatic stress, PTSD and mental health issues. Following an assessment, a resident diagnosed with substance abuse problems is provided care in accordance with ASAM Patient Placement Criteria. The duration of inpatient treatment is customized to meet the specific needs of the resident.
The Palms' residential inpatient program is designed to improve the resident's ability to structure and organize the tasks of daily living, stabilize the individual’s substance use symptoms, to develop and apply sufficient recovery skills, and to develop and practice prosocial behaviors such that imminent return to substance use upon transfer to a less intensive level is avoided.
The residential inpatient treatment program is based on evidenced based therapies such as motivation enhancement therapy, 12-step therapist led counseling, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and family involvement. The Palms residential inpatient treatment program has variable lengths of stay. The program includes a range of cognitive, behavioral, and other therapies administered on an individual and group basis; medication management and medication education; counseling and clinical monitoring; random drug screening; planned clinical activities and professional services to develop and apply recovery skills; family therapy; educational groups; occupational and recreational therapies; art, music or movement therapies; physical therapy; and related services.
The Palms' residential inpatient services for co-occurring disorders is appropriate for individuals whose primary problems involve emotional, behavioral, cognitive, readiness to change, relapse, or recovery environment concerns. The California Palms’ residential inpatient care in a 24-hour treatment setting meets the Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Services level of care found in ASAM Level 3.5.
Continuum of Care Standards

The skilled treatment services include a range of cognitive, behavioral and other therapies administered on an individual and group basis; medication management and medication education; counseling and clinical monitoring; random drug screening; planned clinical activities and professional services to develop and apply recovery skills; family therapy; educational groups; occupational and recreational therapies; art, music or movement therapies; physical therapy; and related services.
Comprehensive, multifaceted treatment is provided to individuals with psychological problems, and chaotic or unsupportive interpersonal relationships, and antisocial value systems. Treatment promotes abstinence from chemical dependency, alcohol abuse, opioid addiction, heroin addiction, drug abuse, substance use, and other negative behaviors to effect change in the patients’ lifestyle, attitudes, and values, and focuses on stabilizing current severity and preparation to continue treatment in less intensive levels of care. We transition the levels of care throughout treatment in response to changing clinical needs and treatment goals.
Our residential inpatient services for co-occurring disorders in a 24-hour treatment setting is appropriate for individuals whose primary problems involve emotional, behavioral, cognitive, readiness to change, relapse, or recovery environment concerns. Intoxication, withdrawal, and biomedical concerns, if present, are safely manageable in a 24-hour treatment setting. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) industry guidelines are found in Treatment Criteria for Addictive Substance-Related and Co-Occurring Condition. The California Palms’ residential inpatient care in a 24-hour treatment setting provides the level of care found in ASAM Level 3.5 known as Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Services. After being assessed, the care given to a person diagnosed with a substance abuse problem, according to criteria developed by the ASAM using the least restrictive treatment plan possible, depending on specific needs.
Upon completion of inpatient/residential or intensive outpatient the Patient will be assessed to determine the level of continuing care required and begin a period of aftercare. Decisions regarding aftercare are based on a continuing care treatment plan identifying specific goals, interventions, and means to assess interventions. A relapse prevention plan will be created and agreed upon prior to discharge.
Upon discharge, veterans are armed with the contacts and resources needed to continue along the road to recovery. Patients located outside Northeast Ohio are encourage to affiliate with their local support groups to ensure continuity of treatment. There is no one-size-fits-all aftercare program. We tailor an aftercare program to meet the veterans individual needs. The Patient's progress will be monitored while in aftercare. The goal is to ensure that the Patient does not need to be returned to treatment and a relapse prevention plan is implemented and proceeding smoothly.
Immediately upon admission, each resident is assessed to determine the level of detoxification services are required. When medically indicated, detoxification will be managed on an inpatient basis prior to inpatient/residential treatment.
Residents requiring medically managed detoxification will be entered into an approved medical facility at either Highland Springs (216-302-0370) or University Hospital (844-541-2087). All residents must have 72 hours of monitored abstinence prior to readmission to the Palms treatment program.
