CALIFORNIA PALMS GROUP THERAPY SESSION

Group 800 - Fitness Therapy: The Fitness Therapy group session teaches clients that drug and alcohol addiction break down the body and that exercise and fitness therapy are proven and effective ways to bring the body back to a natural, healthy balance. The combination of the Palms rehab therapies combined with regular exercise will help the client heal from addiction and achieve lasting wellness.

Group 810 - Mindfulness Therapy: The Mindfulness Therapy group session is a part of the California Palms comprehensive care program to help clients in their pursuit of total wellness. Dr. Daniel Winkle, MD, teaches an eight-week evidence-based program, Mind-Body Skills Group for healing psychological trauma and stress. Dr. Winkle is certified to teach the program from The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (www.cmbm.org). Published studies show 80% reductions in PTSD and substance abuse in military veterans after taking the Mind-Body Skills Group. The program gives veterans a variety of different strategies to cure PTSD, drug and alcohol addiction including breathing, meditation, guided visual imagery, biofeedback, self-awareness, dance, self-expression in words, and drawings in small group experiences.

Group 820 - Meditation Therapy: The Meditation Therapy group session is a part of the California Palms comprehensive care program to help clients in their pursuit of total wellness. Meditation has been an essential part of physical, mental and spiritual healing in many cultures for thousands of years. Additionally, there have been multiple studies conducted that confirm the benefits of this practice in all areas of life - especially during addiction recovery. Regular meditation is a vital part of our rehab program at California Palms and it is also something many of our clients have made a part of their lives post-rehab. It’s a valuable tool in recovery, decision making and in the simple practice of finding calm and mental serenity.

Group 830 - Tai Chi: The Tai Chi group therapy session is a part of the California Palms comprehensive care program to help clients in their pursuit of total wellness. Alcohol and drug addiction impact brain-chemistry and the central nervous system. During their treatment, clients are exposed to therapies that help them improve their fitness, as well as their emotional and spiritual health. Tai Chi is widely recognized for its health benefits. The practice consists of a series of broad, slow movements that were originally developed to help practitioners learn to attack or defend through relaxing their joints, rather than tensing their muscles. These movements have been proven to positively impact circulation.

Group 840 - Yoga Mind Body and Soul: The Yoga Mind Body and Soul group session is a part of the California Palms comprehensive care program to help clients in their pursuit of total wellness. The California Palms yoga sessions are led by Carol Hutcik a certified instructor with the experience and passion to successfully guide your recovery and motivate you to get the most out of this therapy. Clients form a series of poses that have been specifically designed to target different areas of the body and promote flexibility. The poses are held until the instructor directs participants to change. Yoga can help ease the tension, both physical and emotional, that you experience during times of instability in your life. Yoga promotes heighten physical, emotional and spiritual awareness and can help clients identify the physical and behavioral patterns that trigger substance abuse. Yoga can have an immensely positive effect on the mind and the body.

Group 850 - Boxing: The Boxing group therapy session is a part of the California Palms comprehensive care program to help clients in their pursuit of total wellness. Boxing therapy helps clients improve their mental health. Boxing is a combination of both endurance, strength, core, aerobic, and anaerobic exercise. Addiction and alcoholism can create muscular atrophy and malnutrition, which leaves the body weak. Boxing builds muscle, can help the body lose unhealthy weight, and strengthens the heart through cardio exercise. In addition, the body gains power in the legs, core, arms, shoulders, and back. More importantly, boxing is a discipline. Boxing coaches Tom Cordell and Chris Smith encourage a meditative focus for their boxers which increases mindfulness and clarity. As a workout for mind and body, the benefits of boxing are endless.

Group 860 - Tae Kwon Do: The Tae Kwon Do group therapy session is a part of the California Palms comprehensive care program to help clients in their pursuit of total wellness. When an individual is suffering from chemical dependency, every part of them breaks down, including their physical health. Chemical dependency quickly disrupts the brain’s natural chemistry and upsets the harmony between one's body and mind. Tae Kwon Do therapy addresses the significant physical damage caused by substance abuse and make clients aware of the connection between the mind and body in the healing process. Grand Master Sam Naples an eighth-degree master teaches Tae Kwon Do at California Palms. The group session positively impacts the clients’ overall health and make them aware of the very real link that exist between the brain and the rest of the body.

Group 870 - Strength Training: The Strength Training group session is a part of the California Palms’ comprehensive care program to help clients in their pursuit of total wellness. Lifting weights has recovery benefits, it restores the brain’s balance of “happiness-inducing” chemicals like dopamine, which drug and alcohol abuse disrupts. Exercising douses the brain with dopamine. In recovering addicts, there’s an added benefit with lifting weights and physical activity by returning the dopamine levels to pre-abuse heights. Many recovering addicts suffer also from insomnia, and weight training helps reboot the body’s sleep cycle over time. Recovery fitness workouts are designed to activate the neuroendocrine response (responsible for the “runner’s high”), which can help ease depression, anxiety and other issues. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle may also minimize drug cravings, serve as a positive distraction and is a beneficial way to structure the day without using drugs or alcohol.

Group 880 - High Intensity Interval Training: The High Intensity Interval Training group session is a part of the California Palms comprehensive care program to help clients in their pursuit of total wellness. Many recovering addicts suffer also from insomnia, and weight training helps reboot the body’s sleep cycle over time. High-intensity interval training is a form of interval training, a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. High-intensity interval training is the concept where one performs a short burst of high-intensity (or max-intensity) exercise followed by a brief low-intensity activity, repeatedly, until too exhausted to continue. High-intensity interval training workouts are designed to activate the neuroendocrine response, which can help ease depression, anxiety and other issues. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle may also minimize drug cravings, serve as a positive distraction and is a beneficial way to structure the day without using drugs or alcohol. High-intensity interval training workouts provide improved athletic capacity and condition as well as improved glucose metabolism.

Group 890 - Water Aerobics: The Water Aerobics group therapy session occurs in the California Palms jacuzzi spa, clients perform aerobic exercise, mostly vertically and without swimming. It is a type of resistance training. Water aerobics is a form of aerobic exercise that requires water-immersed participants. Most water aerobics is in a group fitness setting with a trained professional teaching for about an hour. The sessions focus on aerobic endurance, resistance training, and creating an enjoyable atmosphere with music. Different forms of water aerobics include: aqua Zumba, water yoga, aqua aerobics, and aqua jog.
